Eight men have been indicted by the U.S. Justice Department, accused of a sprawling campaign of advertising fraud that utilized nearly two million hijacked computer systems and hundreds of servers across dozens of datacenters worldwide, costing advertising networks tens of millions in payments for ad views that never reached a human eye. A Massive Criminal Undertaking Operating under the codename “3ve,” the fraud scheme was massive in scope and complicated in execution. First detected in 2017, the exact beginnings are uncertain, but it is highly likely the botnet was operating for a significant amount of time earlier than initial discovery. The plot made use of a network of hijacked devices infected through the typical methods: attachments in trapped emails and mislabeled downloads scattered throughout the Internet. The exact size, scope, and location of the botnet and the servers managing it shifted constantly, making it much harder to pin down and…

Lately Facebook has had some trouble. There have been many privacy and security issues with the site. Multiple issues with the site have made investors a little wary about keeping the stock they had on hand. They have sold some or all the shares they had.  There were too many investors who sold most or all their shares of Facebook stock that the price of the stock dramatically became reduced. Many think this is perhaps the beginning of the end for the social media conglomerate. With the loss of so much stock it is a wonder if Facebook will survive.  Facebook is more than a social media platform. They have ventured into showing advertisements on their website. This is not something for large eCommerce stores like Amazon. The Facebook advertising is for anyone. Prices for the Facebook digital marketing are reasonable that even a startup on a shoestring digital advertising…

Advertising and its methods developed alongside humans. As technology grew, marketing grew with it, always utilizing new inventions, communication platforms, advertising mediums, etc. Knowing that advertising is closely related to technology, it is undeniable that technologies such as AI, IoT or Blockchain will change the way marketing works. Brief Visit to History Pinpointing the origin of advertising is difficult. In fact, if we look at the advertising as it is, without any subjective opinions on it, we would see that it is a method of sending data. Wikipedia writes that ancient civilizations used advertising methods to spread the king's word across the kingdoms rapidly. Today, when most people think of advertising, they instantly think "ads." Well, it all started in June 1836, in France. A paper by the name La Presse wanted to stay in business, so they started including ads in their papers (for a fee, of course.) Their…

A professor of mine once said; "A piece of Art is worth however much someone else is willing to pay for it." In a sense, the blockchain model maximizes such a transaction. Advertising works in much the same way. Who decides how much a product is worth, and how do you increase the visibility and availability of your product and/or service without getting fleeced? These are all age-old questions that have plagued the marketing world for time out of mind. Digital advertising is everywhere. Chances are, at some point today, you might have to wait for an ad pop-up to show itself before reading on. Or perhaps there are several ads flanking an article as you are trying to read it; or maybe several obnoxious links are dotting the whole page exhibiting annoying behavior. Do you know who or what those links are from and for? Could they be ploys…

The social media titan known as Facebook, has recently announced their plans to release new tools geared towards cracking down on bad businesses that advertise on the popular social media platform. Facebook users can now leave reviews about the service and products they received from a business advertised on Facebook. The big lip-syncing application known as Musical.ly was acquired by Chinese media company, Bytedance, in November 2017 with the goal of boosting ad dollars by using small influencer-based campaigns. They are expanding the platform by doing more than just lip sync videos and plan to use content partnerships by doing custom content creation and co-creation of assets. New Advertising Plan The new ad products include what will be known as the #HashtagChallenge, where brands will challenge their followers to make response videos to their initial video. Advertisers see this as the most interactive advertising product on the table, as it allows users to watch an entire ad and creatively post about the brand. This advertising method will not only reach the brand's followers but the users' following as well, and possibly have an exponential growth with impressions. They are also creating stills and GIFs to redirect users to a brands…
